Traveling With Your Pets: Complete Checklist

Traveling with your cat or dog can be a wonderful experience when you plan ahead. A little preparation can help keep your pet comfortable, safe, and happy before, during, and after your trip.

Before You Leave

Start preparing several days before your trip. Make sure your pet has identification tags with your current contact information, and check that their microchip information is up to date. If you are traveling far from home, ask your veterinarian if your pet needs a health check, vaccinations, or any travel documents.

Help your pet get comfortable with their carrier, crate, harness, or travel seat before the trip. Take short practice trips if your pet is not used to traveling.

During the Trip

Keep your pet secure throughout the journey. Never allow a dog to ride loose in a vehicle, and keep cats safely inside a carrier. Offer water regularly and provide bathroom or exercise breaks when appropriate.

Try to maintain your pet’s normal feeding and bathroom routine. Bring something familiar, such as their favorite blanket or toy, to help reduce stress.

Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle, especially during hot or cold weather.

When You Get Home

Give your pet time to relax after the journey. Set up a quiet, familiar space with fresh water, food, and a comfortable place to rest. Keep an eye on their behavior and make sure they are eating, drinking, and using the bathroom normally.

Check your pet for ticks, injuries, irritation, or anything unusual after outdoor travel. Wash or clean travel bedding, bowls, carriers, and other supplies.

Most importantly, give your pet plenty of love and reassurance. After a long trip, a little extra attention can help them feel safe, comfortable and back home.
